First 3 comments neatly sum up my feelings for !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
1. Why do you want to take the conversation AWAY from your monitized platform
2. If you DO, it already exists within kinja
3. Screw facebook. No I don’t care what the algorithm has to say about it.

Hey! there’s me!
1) This platform may not exist forever, gotta ready the lifeboats on one that has a longer shelf life.

Sounds like they’re kinda distancing themselves from Oppo and maybe trying to re-create it in a blog the editorial staff has ownership of.

why should they care though? I mean if its a job to write and the job goes away...
For us sure, we want to keep these connections alive but I don’t see the strategy business wise to move to facebook.

dont have facebook.... sooo ill just stay right here
(tried facebook for a bit... decided if i ever want to end up hating my friends and family i should keep it... so its gone)

The current staff has either a distrust of or genuine dislike of oppo. Frankly I think thats counterproductive to their business objectives. Seems like you would WANT to cultivate the fanbase instead of driving it away.

Not to sound too hipster but I dropped it in its heyday. I didn’t see what it offered me then and not much has changed.

Facebook is blocked at work. Oppo is my chat group during the workday! I’ve started using Reddit more and more though.

I would tend to agree. I remember when Patrick took charge, there was a fair amount of criticism here at the time about various policies on the FP, content sharing, etc., and he really seemed to get hurt feelings over it. He gets very defensive in response to criticism of the professionalism and ability of his staff, and I think he viewed Oppo as a hostile environment.

actually bothered reading the article now.....
Discussion topics should revolve around DIY stuff, project cars, general car care, cheap Craigslist finds, or just fun car things. No meme posts, no selling, and please nothing too personal. But otherwise, I’m open to pretty much anything, as long as it’s relatively on topic. Just have fun!
no meme posts??

I’ve never even tried it mostly because I already talk to the people I want to talk to and never saw a reason to sign up. I’ve been tempted lately, though, as some of the Camaro forums and groups have moved to Facebook and away from regular web pages.

And we’re really not as wild and wooly as 99% of the web. Stef’s not the only one who would be treated with open arms.
I remember reading a cross thread with had Alanis King writing a bio about how s he met her husband. The folks over at Jez ripped into her because she somehow didn’t do it “right”. This from a fellow Kinja blog. I remember thinking, “young lady who loves cars enough to make her living writing about them and brave enough to put her personal romance story out on the blog to share...yeah, we need more of her type on Oppo.”

The name that shall not be named. Its absolutely policy at Jalopnik, if not all properties, to completely disassociate with ALL user run properties for whatever reason, including any names, links or mentions. It still happens from time to time. I had a nice link to my RAV4 story not long ago, but its certainly the exception rather than the rule...and i would guess only kosher there because Jalopnik actually ran that story.

as a moderator I want to let you know that its been REAL quiet in group meetings lately. This is a well behaved, very cool group that doesn’t need a lot of moderation these days. Facebook...good luck you guys.

Well, you guys keep a pretty light hand on the rudder. That helps.

Yup. Recently I have gone days at a time without checking Oppo. I think it is slowly dying. The post volume is down significantly.
It’s not as though this is a typical ‘user run’ page either. If it were one person’s “blog” we were all posting on I could see the strong disassociation. But this is a group, mostly of Jalopnik readers (or former readers). Heck I have my adblockers whitelisting Jalopnik AND oppositelock for ads, and Oppo remains ad-free. They are missing an opportunity to engage with their community AND receive some extra revenue (albeit small peanuts, although they would get more if we weren’t a dying group)...
![]() 07/09/2018 at 15:23 |
|
It’s ok, we all have bad ideas from time to time.
![]() 07/09/2018 at 15:23 |

yeah, not sure what happened to the volumes, I’ve noticed it across the board, from Jalopnik down to O&E.
![]() 07/09/2018 at 15:39 |

So, they’re doing away with the stars on Articles it seems.
Also, I think the whole Oppositelock/Jalopnik split was short sighted on their end. Oppo is perfect for what they’re looking for.
![]() 07/09/2018 at 15:41 |
|
just on the articles or on the comments as well? The stars on the articles was silly.
![]() 07/09/2018 at 15:42 |
|
I feel like commenting volume can be directly associated with the strangeness of Kinja, in that you can no longer just view all comments. I realize it’s been years since we could view all comments, but I feel like that was really the breaking point where the comments sections started to die. If your comment on Jalopnik isn’t one of the first on an article, it will likely never be seen.
![]() 07/09/2018 at 15:46 |
|
You had to be committed to wading through comments and it certainly hurt them.
![]() 07/09/2018 at 15:50 |

Im worried because I don't have a serious alternative to this site, and I will lose one of my last few reasons to go on the internet
![]() 07/09/2018 at 15:53 |

The current staff has either a distrust of or genuine dislike of oppo.
Probably both. It’s not uncommon for Kinja communities to be critical of their parent blogs. I remember when a lot of Oppo posts would be why “ban cars” sucks or some other critical opinions about the FP.
The other orphaned reader communities weren’t much different and still aren’t much different.
On top of this, I swear I remember Denton having a post explaining why Kinja was made and it largely amounted to “we want a farm of writers we don’t have to pay”.
![]() 07/09/2018 at 15:58 |

I know its hard to hear criticism , but having an antagonistic relationship with your detractors doesn’t help anyone, while addressing them honestly and openly can turn detractors into promotors. You wont win everyone but you weren’t going to get them anyway but the “screw you guys!” route promises you wont get any detractors to your side.

idk if i want to browse reddit on my work computer ....
![]() 07/09/2018 at 16:30 |

Well it all depends what parts of Reddit you frequent I suppose... I like the techie subs and most of the car subs are pretty work safe .
![]() 07/09/2018 at 16:34 |
|
Yeah, but it wasn’t _that_ hard to wade through nearly all the comments. These days it’s basically impossible to see all of the comments.
You have no idea if you’ve clicked ‘load more comments’ enough times, then at some point you accidentally ‘load fewer’ then ‘load more’ again and it’s like you started over and you have no idea if you actually reached the end of the comments or it just randomly decided to stop showing you any more and nobody can help you if you clicked ‘show replies’ ‘no really go ahead and show replies’ to a thread in there somewhere ...
in that one run-on sentence I think the entire system is summarized!
![]() 07/09/2018 at 16:35 |
|
no thats what I mean, the new method is a commitment to clicking “more comments” as opposed to just scrolling through.
![]() 07/09/2018 at 16:51 |
|
Oh, yeah. Definitely.
![]() 07/09/2018 at 17:04 |

I came to Oppo because I could actually engage with people unlike on Jalopnik where you tend to get lost in the absolute storm of mindless comments.

Facebook used to be the thing that everyone wanted to hop on board with. Now it’s Snapchat and Instagram.
Give it 3-5 years, and a new social media will take its place as the new hip and hot.
![]() 07/09/2018 at 18:50 |

That was another thing. At the time, Jalopnik was sharing some of our posts to the FP, and some started to complain about “free content”, although I think most thought it was just cool to have their posts shared, as long as it was with attribution. Then, the FP shares went away, and some people seemed disappointed.

I find every facebook group to be a shitshow. Between creepy 60 year olds and edgelord 15 year old trolls.
